These beautiful falling waters drop over the cliff into an emerald pool of clear water. It is worth the steep hike down to the bottom just to enjoy this peaceful spot for a while.

Chattanooga - View from Bakers Street
I have joined a group of plein air painters from the Chattanooga area, and this is one of the first places where we met and painted. We were standing in an abandoned lot on Bakers Street, looking across the river to downtown Chattanooga, with the chalky bluffs reflecting in the water.

Jonesport Public Library Silent Auction
The Jonesport Public Library means a lot to me. That's where I was invited to first show my work in a public venue by the Art in the Library group, spearheaded by Marshia Brown. These shows resulted in some of my earliest sales, giving me much needed moral support.
This coming Thursday, August the 7th, they will be conducting a silent auction of a whole lot of donated stuff, including one of my paintings, Triptych: Evening Shadows, Carrying Place, Hancock. Hope to see you there!
Robin Rier, left, with her donated painting, with me and my painting on the right.
Triptych: Evening Shadows, Carrying Place, Hancock. 6 x 12 x 3 - $600 retail price.

Spring Thaw
One of the many little trout treams that abound in Maine, ready for the first fishermen! I love fresh caught trout, cooked over an open fire! This scene is from Trescott, Maine.
This is an 8x10 oil on canvasboard, beautifully framed, priced at $300. This one is now at ARTSANDCRAFTSOFMAINE in Lubec.

Plein Air at Wonderland Trail, Mt. Desert Island
Painted with the Plein Air Connection group yesterday on the rocky shore of Mt. Desert Island. Michael Vermette and Becky Wight and I all braved the foggy hike, set up and painted our three little masterpieces. Here's mine (unfinished, may be updated later.)
This is an 11x14 oil on canvasboard - to see more detail on our trip, go to http://michaelevermette.com and click on latest blog post. Contact me at 207-266-6027 for price and availability of this and all my other paintings, or email me at kittelsen@aol.com.

Now in Four Downeast Galleries!
After a month of focused marketing efforts, my work is now represented by four downeast art galleries, the Schooner Gallery in Milbridge, Tunk Mountain Arts and Crafts on Blacks Woods Road (Rt. 182) in Cherryfield, the Woodwind Gallery in Machias, and the ARTWORKSOFMAINE Gallery in Lubec. Here is one of my paintings hanging in my latest gallery, Tunk Mountain Arts and Crafts:
Go see them, and tell them Karsten sent you!
Special thanks to the gallery proprietor, Cynthia Huntington, and the members of the art jury, who graciously accepted my work!

Dull to Colorful!
Something about this painting seemed dull - it was lacking in color.

So I dry-brushed some yellow-green, orange, purple in appropriate areas around the canvas - it seemed to bring the scene to life again - more like it was when I was there.
This is a 9x12 oil on canvasboard and will soon be in a local gallery priced at $400, framed.

Bad Little Falls
This week, Machias is celebrating their 250th anniversary, and as part of the weeklong program, yesterday they offered a plein air paint-out and wet auction. I painted the view of the falls from the Machias riverbank in the parking lot just behind the Woodwind Gallery and the hardware store. The painting sold at the auction that evening. Michael Vermette and Kay Carter from the Plein Air Connection also participated. Michael's painting earned a "best in show" ribbon!

Commission: Ronnie's Deer
Just delivered this 24x48 landscape painting of a deer, seen from just outside his cabin in the woods. What a beautiful spot! For various reasons, it took over 3 years from start to finish...
Thanks for you patience, Ronnie & Connie!

Backyard Butterflies
A few weeks ago, while the blackberries in the backyard were in bloom, the butterflies were everywhere. I took some closeups of a couple of them, then painted them - here's the first one.
This is a Great Spngled Fritillary (Speyeria Cybele) - my wife loves butterflies!
This painting is a 5x7 oil on canvasboard, available beautifully framed for $180, free shipping.
Here is another backyard butterfly.
This is a Monarch (Danaus Plexippus) - a beauty!
Also a 5x7, $180, free shipping.
